Knoll Mock-Up designed by Herbert Matter, ca.1947

Information

The object is a handmade design graphic/mock-up composed of a high-quality printed graphic and a red adhesive foil as an accent surface. This collage mockup was modified for the famous cover of Knoll's 1948 catalogue. The final cover for the catalog consisted of the same graphic only with white as the background color.

Herbert Matter (*April 25, 1907 in Engelberg – May 8, 1984 in Southampton New York) was a Swiss and American photographer and graphic designer. Through his innovative and experimental work, he made an important contribution to the development of graphic design. He worked internationally as a graphic designer, photographer and videographer and his work adorned some of the most prestigious magazines such as fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Arts & Architecture, Fortune Magazine and Town and Country. Matter was also considered one of the important representatives of the New York art scene. Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline and Philip Guston were among his artist friends.

Florence Knoll said in an interview in 1977: "I had seen some of Herbert Matter's work and decided that was what I wanted," Herbert Matter was design consultant for all Knoll International graphics from 1946 to 1966.
